We all have our opinions about people, and sometimes we express our negative thoughts through complaints, rants, or running commentaries, often masked as jokes, to rally others to join us in our cause. The problem, however, is that it is incredibly challenging to do this directly to a person's face.


This is why the term "backstabbing" is so prevalent among us. We would rather refrain from saying anything to someone's face and instead talk behind their back. It's difficult to call someone an idiot to their face or engage in a proper discussion about our dislike for them. Yet, when they are not around, it becomes much easier.


Confrontations are uncomfortable for a reason. No matter how strongly we feel about someone, it is challenging to disconnect from the person on some level when we encounter them face to face. When we actually speak to someone, hear their voice, or see their face, they become human, and it becomes much harder to be cruel to someone we perceive as a fellow human being.


This is why aggressive behavior on the internet is cowardly. It is effortless to be a bully behind a screen, typing away, when we do not have to face the person directly. We can avoid the consequences of our hate and anger towards them, and that consequence is our own conscience.


A simple rule to abide by when it comes to making negative comments about people is this: if you cannot say the same thing to a million people on a stage with a microphone, then do not say it online. Avoid being passive-aggressive, ranting, or complaining. If someone truly bothers you, take action by addressing the issue directly with them or choose to behave in a manner that opposes the behavior you dislike.
