This mindset is precisely why some people fear apologizing, why they become defensive, or even refuse to acknowledge their mistakes. They carry the fear that once they admit their wrongdoing, they will forever be subordinate. We convince ourselves that by inflicting suffering upon the offender, we are teaching them a lesson. However, in reality, this act is driven by our desire for satisfaction from our own anger.


Unfortunately, no positive lessons are truly learned through punishment. The outcomes are limited: either the person learns to avoid getting caught in the future or they internalize the guilt and accept their worthlessness as a human being. Neither of these outcomes equips them with the skills needed for a healthy relationship.


Punishing someone does not make them more considerate or loyal; instead, it only fuels resentment and widens the gap in the relationship. When someone admits their mistake and sincerely seeks our forgiveness to rebuild the alliance, we are faced with a choice. We can either grant them the forgiveness they seek or choose to withhold it, all the while claiming to be in a restored relationship.

Therefore, we might as well choose to live in peace and not harbor suspicion when we accept someone's apology, without the need for punishment. By embracing forgiveness, we pave the way for healing and growth in ourselves and in our relationships.
